Why is the ash a problem ?

Abrasive ash particles in the atmosphere can cause severe damage to modern jet engines.
In one famous 1980's incident, a Boeing 747 (BA Flight 009 'City of Edinburgh') lost power in all 4 engines after flying through an invisible ash plume brought up by the eruption of a volcano in Jakarta.
The aircraft glided downward for a terrifying 23 minutes until cabin crew were finally able to restart the damaged engines.
A later inspection showed the cabin windshield had been sandblasted, severely reducing visibility.
All engines had major damage from ash particles that had heated up and stuck to the insides.
As the engines had cooled down, the molten glass was able to solidify and break off, allowing a restart.
Similar situations involving other aircraft have occurred since then under similar circumstances.

This volcano has produced relatively large amounts of ash for its size, because of the glacier above.
Magma and water explosions can periodically force large plumes of ash upwards into the atmosphere, which have been blown towards Europe by prevailing southerly winds.

What amount of ash is safe?

One of the problems with the complete initial shutdowns in European airspace after the Icelandic eruption, was a lack of knowledge about what levels jet engines could safely tolerate.
New guidelines from the CAA mean that airplanes are now permitted to fly through 'medium density' ash which has been found to have negligable effects on engine safety.
This is double the amount from before, and has been described by experts as the equivalent of
"2 grains of sand in a bathtub"
Accurate forecasting can enable flight plans to be routed around suspected areas of higher particle concentration.

How long could this go on for?

The eruption of Eyjafjallajokull last happened in 1821, and it then erupted on and off for around 2 years.

What happens if your flight is delayed?

If a flight is delayed for longer that 5 hours, you can choose not to travel and claim a refund.
